sanding 01

The completed kayak prior to varnishing and fitting out. At this stage of the build, every square inch of the kayak, both the interior and exterior, is examined to find and coat anything anywhere not covered in epoxy. The bulkheads are sealed all the way round on both sides, and the seams along the rolling bevels of the sheer clamps inside the cockpit compartment are caulked with epoxy-silica-woodflour filler. This all mahogany plywood constructed vessel is now literally encased and embedded within a skin of epoxy resin and fibreglass. The next stage is to sand the boat exterior completely before varnishing with marine quality UV resistant polyurethane varnish - thereby preventing the epoxy resin from breaking down due to long term exposure to sunlight.
