preparing the exterior 01

There is a lot of sanding involved in kayak building, and it begins in earnest here. The hull is to be sheathed in a medium weight length of fibreglass cloth, but in order for the cloth to follow the hull contours and not get snagged, the hull needs to be all nice and smooth with no abrupt or jagged edges along the panel seams. So I go over the seams with copious amounts of ever finer grades of sandpaper until it stops being so angular. I then mask off both sides of the seams with masking tape. Then I fill the gaps in the seams with epoxy-silica-woodflour slightly 'proud' of the edges.
