installing the deck 02

Here I am planing away, making long controlled sweeps with the block plane. It is a skilled job that takes time and patience - a lot of patience. Cedar is a very hard wood prone to tearouts, and to make the final surface really sharp and cleanly defined, I use a scraper plane that produces shavings so fine they are translucent. The area between the bulkheads in the cockpit has a double compound bevel, and can only be planed by eye. To keep the hull from rocking in the slings, I use ratchet strap clamps to hold the boat down tight to the trolley, which becomes in effect a gigantic woodworking vice.
